In a small prospective biopsy study of peripheral artery disease (PAD) patients, calf-muscle mitochondrial respiration normalised to mitochondrial content changed 6 weeks after successful revascularisation in patients with intermittent claudication (a decline the authors read as normalisation), but showed no significant change in patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI), whose mitochondrial content marker (citrate synthase activity) rose. Observational, no control group, very small paired CLTI subgroups.
